The Area

The town of Tournus stands on the right bank of the river Saône, between Chalon-sur-Saône and Mâcon and near the agricultural land of the Mâconnais hills. The region, which is blessed with  a gentle climate, is rich in old buildings and famous wines.

The original Gaulish city of the Aedui tribe became a castrium under Roman rule.  The few surviving traces of the old fortifications are dominated by the tall towers of the Abbey.  Tournus is one of the oldest and most important of the monastic centres of France.  The Abbey and many buildings date from the 10th century.

The region of south Burgundy offers a wealth of visits, architectural and gourmet, not to mention the abundance of superior wines to be sampled throughout the area.   You are assured of a very warm welcome in Saône-et-Loire.
